Weather: An early morning valley fog dissipated almost completely by noon, and the cloudy skies and their predicted inch of snow had barely crested the horizon by nightfall.

Jackson Hole news: The big story, and the buzz around Teton Village, remains the death of skier Mike Kazanjy after an avalanche on Cody Peak. Unfortunately these deaths are becoming a regular occurrence here, where the Teton Range provides one of the nation’s most easily accessible and most dramatic proving grounds for skiers and snowboarders. I have lost more than a few friends and acquaintances during my 24 winters in Western Wyoming. As a backcountry skier myself, my thoughts on these tragedies tend to be critical, even though I have been there and made some of the same mistakes. However, out of respect to those who have passed and their families I remain quiet and do my best to learn (and relearn) these lessons for the benefit of my family and friends.

Today’s link is to an excellent article I took to heart that eschews the shaming response that often ensues after yet another poor decision in the backcountry.

Live to Ski. Another Day.
